5:24 Storytelling at Foundry Photojournalism Workshop Copy 01_2 Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 3:17 Smita Sharma | Career Evolution We sat down with award winning photojournalist Smita Sharma at the 2018 Foundry Photojournalism Workshop in Kolkata, India, who gave us insight into her career evolution as a photographer. Sharma describes how her passion for storytelling and the power of photography took her from Bombay to New York to get out of her comfort zone. Smita Sharma is an award-winning photojournalist and visual storyteller based in Delhi, India, reporting on critical human rights and social issues in her own community as well as in the Global South on assignments for Human Rights Watch, National Geographic Magazine, and other publications. From documenting the effect of pregnancy on girl’s education in Kenya to child marriage in Nepal, and sex-trafficking across India and Bangladesh, Sharma is committed to representing people with dignity and telling underrepresented stories with impact. Sharma is an IWMF Reporting Fellow and a TED Fellow. Her work has been exhibited and shown globally including at the UN Headquarters in New York. Smita is a member of Women Photograph and Diversify Photo and has taken HEFAT training in Mexico City organised by IWMF. She is a graduate from the photojournalism and documentary photography program of International Center of Photography, New York and has a post graduate diploma in Journalism from University of Pune. In 2016, Smita organised a bicycle campaign along with non-profit PVCHR in Varanasi and donated bicycles to abuse survivors who were assaulted on their commute to school. The campaign was a way to de-stigmatise and reintegrate the girls in their communities and help them to continue their education. In this video, he provides advice for young photojournalists looking to tackle assignments, both local and international. Alan was born and raised in New York City’s Chinatown. Since 1996, he has worked in China, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Central Asia, and Ukraine, as well as extensively in the United States. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and his work is in the collection of the Museum Of Modern Art. Chin was nominated twice by The New York Times for the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Kosovo conflict in 1999 and 2000. Currently Alan is also Creative Director of Facing Change: Documenting DETROIT, a community-based photojournalism initiative that is part of Facing Change: Documenting America (FCDA). Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 10:00 Josue Rivas Presentation: Foundry 2022 In this video, self-described Indigenous Futurist and photographer Josue Rivas delves into the imbalance between insider and outsider storytelling within the photography industry, the fraught history of photography portraying Indigenous people inaccurately, and the importance of collaboration. Josué Rivas (Mexica and Otomi) is an Indigenous Futurist, creative director, visual storyteller and entrepreneur working at the intersection of art, technology, journalism, and decolonization. His work aims to challenge the mainstream narrative about Indigenous peoples, co-create with the community, and serve as a vehicle for transformation and collective healing. He is a 2022 NDN Collective Radical Imagination Fellow, Catchlight Leadership Fellow, Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellow, founder of INDÍGENA, co-founder of Indigenous Photograph and curator at Indigenous TikTok. Some of his recent collaborators include Nike, Adobe, Adidas, Levi’s, Apple, National Geographic and The New York Times amongst others. Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 9:16 Brian Palmer Presentation: Foundry 2022 Award-winning photojournalist Brian Palmer reflects on the lessons he has learned during his long and successful career, dwelling on the importance of vulnerability and being a great listener. Brian Palmer is a Peabody Award–winning journalist based in Richmond, Virginia. During his 30-year career he has photographed conflict, politics, activism, daily life, and more around the world and in his own backyard. His photos have appeared in the New York Times, Buzzfeed, Narrative.ly; his writing in Smithsonian Magazine, the New York Times, and the Nation; and audio on Reveal. His documentary, Full Disclosure, which appeared in 2011 on The Documentary Channel, along with several magazine articles and photo exhibitions, grew out of three media embeds in Iraq with U.S. Marines. Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 9:38 Vanessa Charlot Presentation: Foundry 2022 Vanessa Charlot reflects on the process of building trust with subjects as a photographer, ensuring that the camera is used as a tool of power to highlight and raise the voices of the marginalized, and the importance of collaboration. Vanessa Charlot is an award-winning photojournalist/ documentary photographer, filmmaker, lecturer and curator. Her work focuses on the intersectionality of race, spirituality, economics and sexual/gender expression. She shoots primarily in black and white to disrupt compositional hierarchy and explore the immutability of the collective human experience. The purpose of her work is to produce visual representations free of an oppressive gaze. Vanessa seeks to humanize Black bodies through her photography, restoring the dignity and vitality of those often shot as subjects divorced from context, motives, and histories. She has worked throughout the U.S., Caribbean and Southeast Asia. Her photographs have been commissioned by the New York Times, Gucci, Vogue, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Oprah Magazine, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Apple, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, Artnet News, The Washington Post and other national and international publications. She lectures at the International Center of Photography. In 2021, she was awarded the Courage in Journalism Award presented by the International Women’s Media Foundation. Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 6:23 Amber Terranova Presentation: Foundry 2022 Amber Terranova, experienced magazine photo editor, gives insight into the workings of magazine publishing, and how photo editors strategize about assigning stories to photographers. Amber Terranova is an independent photo director and educator based in New York. She is currently working as a Consultant for Magnum Education and is a BFA Faculty member at the School of Visual Arts. Previously she worked for Adobe, Screen Projects and on special projects for Schilt Publishing, a photo and art book publisher from Amsterdam. In 2016 Amber worked as the Director of Photography on a project for Shinola, commissioning photographers and art directing branded content editorial features and in 2018 she photo directed three of their commercial catalogs. Amber has worked as a contributing photo editor at People Magazine, Time Home Entertainment, The New Yorker, and from 2008 to 2012 she held the position of Photo Editor for Photo District News (PDN), the leading magazine for professional photographers. Previously, she held positions at New York Magazine and Outside magazine. Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 6:38 Ben Brody Presentation: Foundry 2022 In this video, Ben Brody gives an overview of the photography education program he built in partnership with VII Academy and the YMCA in Boston, and some of the impacts of the program. Ben Brody is an independent photographer, educator, and picture editor working on long-form projects related to the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their aftermath. He is the Director of Photography for The GroundTruth Project and Report for America, and a co-founder of Mass Books. His first book, Attention Servicemember, was shortlisted for the 2019 Aperture - Paris Photo First Book Award and is now in its second edition. Ben holds an MFA from Hartford Art School's International Low-Residency Photography program. He resides in western Massachusetts.
