You can find the whole series here: everydayprojects.org/webinars The Everyday Projects 1:14:52 The Essentials Season 3: “Supporting your Long-term Vision” with James Rodríguez Accomplished photographer James Rodríguez will unpack the difficulties around sustaining long-term projects by illustrating how to create a unified vision, how to build and maintain relationships with communities, and how to seek various avenues of funding and support for the same project over time—whether through assignments, grants, or outside sources such as NGOs, commercial work, fixing, and video assignments. In this session, James will divulge his tips and tricks for achieving success with ongoing projects and how to create continuity and avoid burn-out. James Rodríguez is a Guatemala-based documentary photographer and filmmaker focusing on post-war processes, human rights abuses, migration, land tenure, and social conflicts in Mexico and Central America, but particularly in Guatemala, where his long-term project stems back to 2004. James, who holds a B.A. in Cultural Geography from UCLA, is represented by Panos Pictures and is a proud community member of The Everyday Projects, Diversify Photo, and Frontline Freelance Mexico. Currently working on a separate long-term project in the Yucatan peninsula funded by the Mexican National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA), James has worked for publications such as National Geographic, Le Monde, The LA Times, The New York Times, NPR, Vogue, and The Guardian, among others. James also collaborates regularly with NGOs, including Amnesty International, Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, UNDP, CARE, Justice in Motion, Rotary International. The Everyday Projects 1:19:26 The Essentials: The Anatomy of a Story by Andrea Wise In this session, Andrea Wise deconstructs two published stories she commissioned to demystify how stories come to be from the editor’s perspective. Wise talks about story origination, including assignment work and stories pitched by photographers, getting ideas and budgets approved, creative planning/art direction, working visually in harmony with text, selecting and sequencing images, and laying out stories for publication. You will learn more about what visual editors do, how to get on their radar, how best to work with them on assignment, and how to maximize the chances of getting your pitches picked up. The Foundry Photojournalism Workshop offers majority world students who could not otherwise afford it a chance to learn from some of the world's most well respected photojournalists and photography professionals. Nichole Sobecki is a photographer and filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. She is represented internationally by the photo agency VII. Nichole graduated from Tufts University before beginning her career in Turkey, Lebanon, and Syria, focusing on regional issues related to identity, conflict, and human rights. From 2012-2015 Nichole led Agence France-Presse’s East Africa video bureau, and was a Rory Peck Awards News Finalist for her coverage of the Westgate mall attacks in Kenya. In 2018 she was awarded by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights prize in new media for her images documenting Europe's response to the the African migration crisis. Nichole's work has been recognized by Pictures of the Year, the One World Media Awards, the Alexandra Boulat Award for Photojournalism, The Magenta Foundation, and The Jacob Burns Film Center, among others. She is also a contributor to Everyday Africa, a collection of images shot on mobile phones across the continent, and an attempt to showcase the moments missing from dramatic news images — everyday life that is neither idealized nor debased. Nichole aims to create photographs and films that demand consideration for the lives of those represented – their joys, challenges, and ultimately their humanity. She has completed assignments throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia for National Geographic, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Foreign Policy, The Financial Times Magazine, The Guardian, and Le Monde, and her work has been exhibited internationally. This new and free resource helps you to organize a public art project in your community. It is an opportunity to work with your neighbors to recognize and celebrate incredible people who have strengthened and supported your community. Come learn about it from the project co-founders and writers of the toolkit! This Community Heroes project began as a collaboration in Fort Greene, Brooklyn in 2016. Since then, it has become an annual neighborhood staple in Fort Greene Park and Commodore Barry Park. The project has also been done in Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, Red Hook and University Heights in the Bronx.
