She tells us about her beginnings in the photojournalism industry and how it felt to go back to photojournalism after leaving Time. MaryAnne Golon is the Director of Photography at The Washington Post. Before joining The Post in 2012, MaryAnne was the director of photography at Time Magazine and a senior photography editor there for more than 20 years. She graduated with honors from The University of Florida with a B.S. in Journalism. Before joining The Post in 2012, MaryAnne curated Look 3: The Festival of the Photograph and help guide the 2-year product build of a digital asset management system for a major non-profit organization. Golon was also director of photography at Time magazine where she co-managed the international newsweekly’s photography department for more than 15 years. She graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Journalism. Golon has received many individual and team picture-editing awards from the POYi (Pictures of the Year International) and NPPA's (National Press Photographer’s Association) Best of Photojournalism competitions. Communication Arts, Society of Publication Designers, and American Photography have all recognized her work. She was awarded Picture of the Editor of the Year from the IFA Lucie Awards in 2013. She was twice selected for American Photo magazine’s list of the 100 most important people in photography. MaryAnne received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Communications from the University of Florida and is a distinguished alumna. She completed a fellowship in Public Policy and Media Studies at Duke University. Laura is currently the executive producer and co-founder of United Photo Industries and Photoville where she has produced over 300 photo exhibitions and public projects throughout the world including Hamburg, Tokyo, Lodz, Sydney and Shanghai, and has brokered partnerships with over 100 entities including National Geographic, Instagram, TIME Magazine, The Pulitzer Center, NYC Parks and NYC Department of Transport to name a few. UPI recently has been working with the United Nations and produced and curated 17 large scale exhibitions at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul and is working on a long-term global project on Migration to be completed in 2019.While spearheading UPI, Laura also recently served as the Senior Producer for the Future of Story Telling Festival in New York City and has in the last 6 years worked at various wonderful non-profit institutions such as Creative Time as their Senior Producer and has been Moonlighting as the Line Producer and Director of Operations for the World Science Festival on a freelance basis. Daniel Berehulak is an independent photojournalist based in Mexico City. Born to immigrant parents, Daniel grew up on a farm outside of Sydney, Australia. His work has been recognized with two Pulitzer Prizes. In 2015, for his coverage of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa and in 2017 for his coverage of the so-called “war on drugs” in the Philippines, both for The New York Times. In 2011, he was also a Pulitzer finalist for his coverage of floods in Pakistan. Daniel has received several other honors, including six World Press Photo awards, two Photographer of the Year awards from POYi, and the prestigious John Faber, Olivier Rebbot and Feature Photography awards from the Overseas Press Club. Mary Calvert is committed to using photography to affect meaningful social change and is known for producing work on under-reported and neglected gender based, human rights issues. For the past several years, Mary has focused her journalistic attention on the relegation and abuse of women and men in the U.S. Armed Forces. This work was a finalist in Feature Photography in the 2020 Pulitzer Prizes and has won numerous awards including the World Press Photo Contest and the Cliff Edom New America Award. The work has been supported by grants from Getty Images, the Alexia Foundation, and Mary is a 2017-2018 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow in Photography. This story is told through hundreds of letters shared by Sheila Rule, a former New York Timescorrespondent, and Joe Robinson, a man serving a prison sentence of 25 years to life. Despite a 20 year age difference, and undeterred by the physical barriers of prison, their love has unstoppable momentum. Intimate and nuanced, this short film visits the space between compassion and passion, revealing a man who transcends his crime and a woman who dares to break the rules. In the process, they shine a light on the practice of mass incarceration in the US. “Sheila & Joe” premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival in 2021 and received Second Place for Documentary Daily Life from Pictures of the Year International 2020. The film was published on NPR’s The Picture Show in 2021. The VII Foundation 54:20 Arturo Soto – The Psycho-Geography of a British City How can photography challenge stereotypes of a well-known city? Is it possible to picture the politics of a place? What are the costs and benefits of asking these questions from the position of the outsider? In this event, Mexican-born photographer Arturo Soto discusses these themes in his work about the British university city of Oxford following the controversial “Brexit” referendum that led to the UK leaving the European Union. Soto’s work has been published in his book “A Certain Logic of Expectations”, which is described as proposing a counter-narrative of Oxford. Drawing on psycho-geography, and using an interplay of words and text, the work reflects on the contested relationship between visual representation and the history and myths of a particular location. The VII Foundation 54:26 Book Club – Ed Kashi, The Cali Years The Cali Years is a 25-year collection of Ed Kashi’s archive from 1979-2004, from his time spent living in California. This significant period marked the development of a college graduate into a renowned visual storyteller. This motley collection of images contains everything from family life to celebrities, from magazine assignments to in-depth personal projects. What was originally intended to be a small zine became a fold-out hand-bound collectible book. This collaborative project made in Ed’s studio with Brenda Bingham and Michael Curry will be produced in a limited edition of 100. In this event – hosted by Ziyah Gafic – Ed, Brenda, and Michael discuss the purpose and production of this book. Students in the Bronx Junior Photo League (BJPL), the Bronx Documentary Center’s (BDC) free documentary storytelling and college success program for 6th through 12th grade students, have been documenting social justice issues and community-based stories since 2013. The BJPL–and the work the students make–is the heart of the BDC’s mission: to use community-based documentary practice and education to explore vital issues, stimulate critical thought, and drive social change. In March 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the BDC made the decision to suspend all programs and move to remote learning. Our students, who are used to working in a program based on the ability to go outside and photograph in the community, quickly learned to turn their lens to the vulnerable space of their private lives.
