9:09 Nina Robinson Presentation: Foundry 2022 In this video, Nina Robinson discusses the importance of family photographs, and how they can be intergenerational learning opportunities. Nina Robinson is an award-winning documentary photographer, educator, and Fujifilm Ambassador. Including precisely what is necessary, her work has been described as tender, cinematic and visceral. It has been featured on international platforms, including Netflix, Lifetime, RollingStone, New York Times, and TIME. She covers stories in the American South, Midwest, and East coast. Robinson developed a groundbreaking and innovative phototherapy program in 2015 with senior citizens at William Hodson Community Center in the Bronx. Through the use of photography, older residents were able to explore personal and social issues openly. She continues similar social workshops and programming centered around photography across the country. Robinson is committed to making photography in and with communities to expand knowledge, build relationships, and diversify visual narratives. Foundry Photojournalism Workshop provides majority world students who could not otherwise afford it, a chance to learn from some of the world's most well-respected photojournalists and photography professionals. Jason illustrates what he calls the visual grammar of photography, which includes composition, light, perspective, and context, and how he strives to work within that grammar to capture images with an emotional resonance. After trips to Germany and Romania for their first democratic elections he traveled to Russia in 1991, just before the August coup that marked the end of the USSR, and has returned many times since culminating in a photography book project called Wonderland: A Fairy Tale of the Soviet Monolith, winner of Best Photography Book 2008 by Pictures of the Year International. In 2004 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to return to Russia to make a series of large format color portraits called Title Nation with a Russian colleague which will be published Fall 2010. Jason Eskenazi has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, 1999; The Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize, 1999, for his work in a Jewish Village in Azerbaijan; and The Alicia Patterson Foundation Grant, 1996. Every few months, VII Insider invites photographers from VII Community to present their stories. In this episode, we look at three photography projects that document life in small communities. VII Community provides ongoing education and support to a network of VII Academy alumni and Foundry Photojournalism Workshop participants. VII Community is a program of The VII Foundation in partnership with PhotoWings. We are delighted to be joined by Peruvian photographer Francisco Vigo, who will present his project “Soon the Rain Will Come”, capturing the Porcón community located next to the Yanacocha mine, one of the most important mines in Peru. Ksenia Ivanova, a Russian photographer currently based in Georgia, will discuss her series “Between the Trees”, offering insight into the Russian-occupied breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Bulgarian photographer Mihaela Aroyo will showcase “Dreaming in Bulgarian”, giving voice to the Bulgarian diaspora living in the historical region of Bessarabia within Moldova and Ukraine. This new and free resource helps you to organize a public art project in your community. It is an opportunity to work with your neighbors to recognize and celebrate incredible people who have strengthened and supported your community. Come learn about it from the project co-founders and writers of the toolkit! This Community Heroes project began as a collaboration in Fort Greene, Brooklyn in 2016. Since then, it has become an annual neighborhood staple in Fort Greene Park and Commodore Barry Park. The project has also been done in Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, Red Hook and University Heights in the Bronx.
