PTSD: The Lasting Effects of Photojournalism
The life of a photojournalist can be hard and dangerous, and none are immune from the detrimental effects of PTSD. In this video, award-winning photojournalists Mary Calvert, MaryAnne Golon, Ron Haviv, Lynn Johnson, John Moore, and Nichole Sobecki give expert advice about how they deal with low moments and cultivate resilience. Mary Calvert is committed to using photography to affect meaningful social change and is known for producing work on gender-based human rights issues. Calvert has been focusing her journalistic attention on the continually under-reported relegation and abuse of women in the US Armed Forces. Calvert has won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award twice and is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist in Feature Photography. Recently, Calvert was awarded the 2015 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Fellowship. MaryAnne Golon is director of photography at the Washington Post. As a member of the senior management team, she supervises all aspects of photography for the daily newspaper and its digital forms: on the web, mobile and tablet. MaryAnne received an IFA Lucie award as Picture Editor of the Year in 2013. She was previously Time magazine's director of photography and co-managed the international newsweekly’s photography department for more than 15 years, and was directly involved in the production of scores of award-winning Time covers and special editions, as well as coordinating Time's photographic coverage of the Olympic Games for sixteen years. She led the photo team that produced the Hurricane Katrina and the September 11, 2001 special Time editions that each won coveted ASME National Magazine Awards. She is on the Board of Directors of the Eddie Adams Workshop. Ron Haviv is an award-winning photojournalist and conflict photographer who as documented international and civilian conflicts around the world since the Cold War. His work on Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and the Balkan concentrates not only on the direct effects of conflict but also upon the humanitarian consequences which are longer term and continue long after the gunfire has ceased. His awards include World Press Photo, Picture of the Year, Overseas Press Club and the Leica Medal of Excellence. Appreciating the need for a different kind of photo-collective to support and market the images of photographers he co-founded VII in 2001. Lynn Johnson is a National Geographic Photography Fellow and a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. She is known for shooting elusive subjects—language, disease, rape, water—and for asking tough questions. Her gripping photo essays of a family struggling with AIDS, of children coping with the brain death of their mother, and transgender teens are classics of the genre. She has led workshops for refugees in Colombia and for young people at National Geographic Photo Camps. John Moore is a senior staff photographer and special correspondent for Getty Images. He has photographed in 65 countries on six continents and was posted internationally for 17 years, first to Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and Pakistan. Since returning to the U.S. in 2008 he has since focused on immigration and border issues. Moore has won top awards throughout his career, including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, World Press Photo honors, the John Faber Award and the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club, Photographer of the Year from Pictures of the Year International, the NPPA and Sony World Photography Organization. Nichole Sobecki is a photographer and filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. She is represented internationally by the photo agency VII. Sobecki graduated from Tufts University before beginning her career in Turkey, Lebanon, and Syria, focusing on regional issues related to identity, conflict, and human rights. From 2012-2015 Nichole led Agence France-Presse’s East Africa video bureau, and was a Rory Peck Awards News Finalist for her coverage of the Westgate mall attacks in Kenya. In 2018 she was awarded by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights prize in new media for her images documenting Europe's response to the African migration crisis. Nichole's work has been recognized by Pictures of the Year, the One World Media Awards, the Alexandra Boulat Award for Photojournalism, The Magenta Foundation, and The Jacob Burns Film Center, among others.

Archiving Images: History's Primary Sources
From websites like Photobucket to apps like Instagram, the digital age has seen an extraordinary explosion in everyday photography, but are we archiving these images appropriately for posterity? In this video, award-winning photographers Victor Blue, Mary Calvert, Ed Kashi, Laura Roumanos, Camille Seamen, and Adriana Zehbrauskas help us understand the importance of taking care with our photographic history, so that the images can continue to inform and inspire for years to come. Victor J. Blue is a New York based photojournalist whose work is most often concerned with the legacy of armed conflict, human rights and the protection of civilian populations, and unequal outcomes resulting from policy and politics. He has worked in Central America since 2002, concentrating on social conflict in Guatemala, and since 2009 has photographed the Counterinsurgency war in Afghanistan. He has completed assignments in Syria, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Iraq, and India, and has documented news stories and social issues across the United States. He worked as a staff photographer at The Record in Stockton CA, and holds a Masters Degree in Visual Communication from Ohio University. In 2010, 2011, and 2015 his work in Afghanistan was honored in Pictures of the Year International. In 2017 he garnered three awards in the Pictures of the Year International. Mary Calvert is committed to using photography to affect meaningful social change and is known for producing work on gender-based human rights issues. Calvert has been focusing her journalistic attention on the continually under-reported relegation and abuse of women in the US Armed Forces. Her work “Sexual Assault in America’s Military” was awarded 1st Prize, Long Term Projects in the 2016 World Press Photo Contest. Calvert has won the Robert F. Ed Kashi is an acclaimed photojournalist who uses photography, filmmaking and social media to explore geopolitical and social issues that define our times. He is also a dedicated educator and mentor to photographers around the world and lectures frequently on visual storytelling, human rights and the world of media. A leading voice in the photojournalism world, Kashi frequently lectures on a wide range of topics for arts institutions, universities, schools and professional organizations. His work has been published and exhibited worldwide, receiving numerous awards and honors. Laura Roumanos is the executive producer and co-founder of United Photo Industries and Photoville where she has produced over 400 photo exhibitions and public projects worldwide. Originally from Sydney, Roumanos worked as a Producer and Arts Administrator before making the big move to NYC where she joined the Manhattan Theatre Club. She then headed to St. Ann’s Warehouse as the General Manager for several years where she worked to help present and produce large-scale international theatre, music, and art events. Camille Seaman was born to a Native American (Shinnecock tribe) father and African American mother. She graduated from the State University of New York at Purchase, where she studied photography with Jan Groover and has since taken master workshops with Steve McCurry, Sebastiao Salgado, and Paul Fusco. Her photographs have been published in National Geographic Magazine, Italian Geo, The New York Times Sunday magazine, Newsweek, Outside, Zeit Wissen, Men’s Journal, Camera Arts, Issues, PDN, and American Photo among many others. Her photographs have received many awards including: a National Geographic Award, 2006; and the Critical Mass Top Monograph Award, 2007. Adriana Zehbrauskas is a Brazilian documentary photographer based in Mexico City, Mexico. Her work covers mostly issues related to migration, religion and the aftermath of the violence related to the drug wars in Mexico as well as the daily life of sub and misrepresented communities. She contributes regularly to The New York Times, BuzzFeed News, The Washington Post and others. She’s one of the recipients of the first Getty Images Instagram Grant and was awarded Best Female Photojournalist -Troféu Mulher Imprensa (Brazil). Her mobile photography work was selected by Time Magazine for the “29 Instagrams That Defined the World in 2014″ and her project on Faith in Brazil and Mexico was awarded a Art & Worship World Prize by the Niavaran Artistic Creation Foundation.

Mary Calvert Presentation - Eddie Adams Workshop 2020
During the virtual 2020 Eddie Adams Workshop, award-winning photojournalist Mary Calvert shared a presentation about her recent work covering issues of sexual abuse in the U.S. military and the lives of the veterans who have survived such abuse. Mary Calvert is committed to using photography to affect meaningful social change and is known for producing work on under-reported and neglected gender based, human rights issues. For the past several years, Mary has focused her journalistic attention on the relegation and abuse of women and men in the U.S. Armed Forces. This work was a finalist in Feature Photography in the 2020 Pulitzer Prizes and has won numerous awards including the World Press Photo Contest and the Cliff Edom New America Award. The work has been supported by grants from Getty Images, the Alexia Foundation, and Mary is a 2017-2018 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow in Photography. The Eddie Adams Workshop is the only tuition-free photojournalism seminar of its kind. Applicants at the start of their career submit portfolios for consideration. One hundred participants selected solely on the merit of their pictures team up with top professional photographers and editors for a four-day gathering that includes assignments, portfolio reviews, panel discussions and presentations. The Workshop began in 1988 with the goal to redress the exclusivity of professional opportunities by accepting students based on their demonstrated skills, and not on their ability to pay tuition. The all-volunteer faculty and staff, many of whom are alumni, are passionate about the mission and donate their time and expertise. The Workshop has an unparalleled history of nurturing talent, exchanging ideas and building relationships. The workshop takes place annually over Columbus Day Weekend, normally in Jeffersonville, New York. During the pandemic, the workshop has been conducted virtually.

The Battle Within: Sexual Assault in America’s Military has been awarded the 2015 National Press Photographers Association, Cliff Edom New America Award and the 2013 the Canon Female Photojournalist Award. The resulting work was featured in a solo exhibition at the 2014 Visa Pour L’Image, International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan, France. In 2014 Calvert was the recipient of the Alexia Foundation Women’s Initiative Grant for her project Missing in Action: Homeless Women Veterans, and in 2015, she was awarded the 2015 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Fellowship. Calvert has won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award twice and is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist in Feature Photography. This new and free resource helps you to organize a public art project in your community. It is an opportunity to work with your neighbors to recognize and celebrate incredible people who have strengthened and supported your community. Come learn about it from the project co-founders and writers of the toolkit! This Community Heroes project began as a collaboration in Fort Greene, Brooklyn in 2016. Since then, it has become an annual neighborhood staple in Fort Greene Park and Commodore Barry Park. The project has also been done in Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, Red Hook and University Heights in the Bronx.
