A Presentation of Ed Kashi & Julie Winokur’s film, Sheila and Joe
In this special presentation, Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur introduce their short film “Sheila and Joe,” followed by a question and answer. with the filmmakers and subjects. “Sheila and Joe” is a love story that unfolds behind bars. This story is told through hundreds of letters shared by Sheila Rule, a former New York Timescorrespondent, and Joe Robinson, a man serving a prison sentence of 25 years to life. Despite a 20 year age difference, and undeterred by the physical barriers of prison, their love has unstoppable momentum. Intimate and nuanced, this short film visits the space between compassion and passion, revealing a man who transcends his crime and a woman who dares to break the rules. In the process, they shine a light on the practice of mass incarceration in the US. “Sheila & Joe” premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival in 2021 and received Second Place for Documentary Daily Life from Pictures of the Year International 2020. The film was published on NPR’s The Picture Show in 2021.

Ed Kashi, Julie Winokur, and Tim Raphael Present Newest Americans
In 2014, at a moment when immigration was cresting a wave in the public consciousness in America, Newest Americans was launched. Cities and counties across the country were beginning to shift to minority majority status, DACA was altering the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people, and a backlash against immigrants would help fuel a presidential campaign. In this climate, project partners Talking Eyes Media, VII Photo, and the Center for Migration and the Global City at Rutgers-Newark birthed a project that honors the past, present and future of our migrating identities. Newest Americans is a multimedia collaboratory of journalists, media-makers, artists, faculty and students telling the stories that radiate from the most diverse university in the nation and the global city of Newark, New Jersey. This project’s stories have been published in National Geographic, The New York Times, The Nation, The Atlantic, and Mother Jones, and have garnered support from National Geographic, the Dodge Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Most recently Newest Americans was named the 2021 Online Storytelling Project of the Year by Pictures of the Year International. In this presentation, Ed Kashi, Julie Winokur, and Tim Raphael share a sample reel and a selection of work from Newest Americans, discuss their most recent developments in curriculum and teacher training, and the process of creating the Newark Story Bus, which is a mobile media lab scheduled to launch this spring. The goal of this multi-year project is to shift the narrative on immigration and support the next generation of diverse storytellers.

Triumph & Defeat in Washington D.C - Capturing the Inauguration & People’s March
As part of the growing relationship between The VII Foundation and Apple Inc., contributing photographer to the foundation Ed Kashi was commissioned to use Apple’s Vision Pro goggles to capture ‘spatial’ stills and videos of President Trump’s inauguration and the lead-up to a counterprotest, the People’s March, the following day. Alongside his wife and collaborator, Julie Winokur, the couple captured these two polarized events in the cold, snowy days of late January 2025 in Washington, DC. Having covered Trump’s first inauguration in 2016 and the ‘Women’s March’ that took place the following day, the contrast between the two presidential eras was great. In 2016, the crowd was much smaller, and the weather was less foreboding, while the Women’s March was vast. This time, the Trump crowd was triumphant, even in terrible weather conditions, appearing to reflect the cult-like following he had developed. The People’s March was anemic by comparison and evoked a sense of defeat and exhaustion in those who oppose Trump. Join us for this live discussion as we examine the coverage of these significant events and the technologies employed.

Ed Kashi: Making Change Through Photography
In this video, award-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi tell us about some of his recent work and what motivates him in his career. Ed Kashi is an acclaimed photojournalist who uses photography, filmmaking and social media to explore geopolitical and social issues that define our times. He is also a dedicated educator and mentor to photographers around the world and lectures frequently on visual storytelling, human rights and the world of media. He has covered topics as diverse as the impact of oil in Nigeria, the protestant community in Northern Ireland, the lives of Jewish settlers in the West Bank, the impact of an aging society through his groundbreaking project, Aging in America, climate change, the plight of Syrian refugees, and the global epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease among agricultural workers. A sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects are signatures of his work. A member of VII Photo Agency since 2010, Kashi has been recognized for his complex imagery and its compelling rendering of the human condition. His early adoption of hybrid visual storytelling has produced a number of influential short films and in 2015 he was named Multimedia Photographer of the Year. Kashi’s embrace of new approaches to visual storytelling has led to creative social media and printed projects for a range of clients including National Geographic, Open Society Foundations, The New Yorker, MSNBC, GEO Germany, Fortune, Human Rights Watch, International Medical Corps, MediaStorm, NBC.com, New York Times Magazine, Oxfam, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and TIME magazine. From implementing a unique approach to photography and filmmaking in his 2006 Iraqi Kurdistan Flipbook, to real-time Instagram coverage of Hurricane Sandy for TIME Magazine in 2012, Kashi continues to create powerful imagery and engage with the world in new ways. A leading voice in the photojournalism world, Kashi frequently lectures on a wide range of topics for arts institutions, universities, schools and professional organizations. His work has been published and exhibited worldwide, receiving numerous awards and honors. Through his editorial assignments and personal projects Kashi has published nine books, including Curse of the Black Gold: 50 Years of Oil in the Niger Delta, THREE, and Photojournalisms. In 2002, Kashi in partnership with his wife, writer + filmmaker Julie Winokur, founded Talking Eyes Media. The non-profit company has produced numerous award-winning short films, exhibits, books, and multimedia pieces that explore significant social issues. They are currently engaged in a 5-year storytelling project called Newest Americans with Rutgers University in Newark focused on immigration for which they recently received a two year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Kashi is also on the Board of Directors of the Catchlight Foundation.

Pierre Terdjman on the CatchLight/PhotoWings/Dysturb Partnership
Photojournalist Pierre Terdjman discusses the partnership between PhotoWings and CatchLight, a hybrid nonprofit media organization borrowing from the practices of art, journalism, and social justice. In particular, he touches on the collaboration to produce educational, public art projects developed with Dysturb, a media organization co-founded by Pierre. Pierre Terdjman is a French documentary photographer based in Paris, and the co- founder/director of Dysturb, an alternative media movement. He started his career for the left-wing Israeli daily Haaretz where he covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He moved back to France in 2007 to work as a staff photographer at Gamma agency till 2009. Since then, he has worked as a freelance photographer for The New York Times, GQ Magazine and Paris-Match on post-electoral violence in Kenya, on the Russian-Georgian conflict, in Afghanistan and on the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. More recently, he covered the fall of Ben Ali in Tunisia, the fall of Mubarak in Egypt, the liberation struggle against Gaddafi in Libya, as well as the conflict in Central African Republic. He has also collaborated as a video director with NGOs such as AFD (Agence Française de développement) and Unicef, to document their projects in Niger and the Ivory Coast. His is represented by Myriam Bouagal Gallery in Paris.
