Ben Lowy: Power of Photography, Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2013
In conversation at the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop in Sarajevo, Bosnia, photographer Ben Lowy explores the common phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” He goes on to find the essence of photography’s power in the way that photos allow people to share moments and experiences across time. Benjamin Lowy is award winning photographer based in New York City. He received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002 and began his career covering the Iraq War in 2003. Since then he has covered major stories worldwide. In 2004 Lowy attended the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass, he was named in Photo District News 30 and his images of Iraq were chosen by PDN as some of the most iconic of the 21st century. Lowy has received awards from World Press Photo, POYi, PDN, Communication Arts, American Photography, and the Society for Publication Design. Lowy has been a finalist for the Oskar Barnak Award, a finalist in Critical Mass, included in Magenta Flash Forward 2007, as well as the OSI Moving Walls 16 exhibit. His work from Iraq, Darfur, and Afghanistan have been collected into several gallery and museum shows, and shown at the Tate Modern, SF MOMA, Houston Center for Photography, Invalides, and Arles. His work from Darfur appeared in the SAVE DARFUR media campaign.In 2012, Lowy was awarded the Magnum Foundation Emergency fund to continue his work in Libya. In the same year, he received the International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award for Photojournalism. Lowy is based in New York City. He is currently editorially represented by Reportage by Getty Images.

Photographer James Whitlow Delano: Impact of Family Photographs, Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2012
With a father who was an avid hobbyist photographer, James Whitlow Delano discusses how looking at his family's photo albums have given him food for thought when considering the value and function of photography. James Whitlow Delano has lived in Asia for 18 years. His work has been awarded internationally: the Alfred Eisenstadt Award (from Columbia University and Life Magazine), Leica’s Oskar Barnack, Picture of the Year International, PDN and others. Delano’s series on Kabul’s drug detox and psychiatric hospital was awarded 1st place in the 2008 NPPA Best of Photojournalism competition for Best Picture Story. His first monograph book, “Empire: Impressions from China” and work from “Japan Mangaland” have shown at several Leica Galleries in Europe. “Empire” was the first ever one-person show of photography at La Triennale di Milano Museum of Art. “The Mercy Project / Inochi” his charity photo book for hospice received the PX3 Gold Award and the Award of Excellence from Communication Arts. His work has appeared in magazines and photo festivals on five continents from Visa Pour L’Image, Rencontres D’Arles; to Noorderlicht. Photographer Paula Bronstein: Resilience, Foundry Photojournalism Workshop
Paula Bronstein opens up about the traumatic experiences that many photographers encounter. Speaking only for herself, Paula discusses how she deals with those troubling moments. Paula Bronstein has been working as a photojournalist for close to 30 years and as a senior staff photographer with Getty Images for 10 years. In the Asian region and beyond, she has covered an enormous variety of natural disasters, war – conflict zones, news and features. After September 11, 2001 she was assigned to cover Pakistan and Afghanistan, focusing a lot of attention on Afghanistan over the past decade of war there. Among the many coveted awards, Pulitzer finalist in the “Breaking News” category in 2011 for her work covering the “Pakistan Floods”. Photographer of the year by the Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) of Thailand. 2010, runner-up “Photographer Of The Year” for her portfolio, in both Pictures of the Year-International ( POY ), and National Press Photographer’s Association (NPPA) . Other awards include Days Japan contest, finalist in the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. In 2008, the John Faber award from the Overseas Press Club of America.
