Ben Bohane's Historical Archive
Award-winning photojournalist Ben Bohane might have the largest photographic archive of the Pacific Islands—in this video, he tells us what it means to take part in the documentation of our world, and the important role photography plays in preserving history. Ben Bohane is an Australian photojournalist, author and TV producer who has covered Asia and the Pacific islands for the past 30 years. He is the founder and present Director of www.wakaphotos.com, the only photo agency based in the Pacific islands. He has the largest personal photo archive of the South Pacific in the world. His photographs are collected by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Australian War Memorial, as well as being held in private collections. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, National Geographic, The Wall St Journal, Stern (Germany), Monocle, The Guardian, French Geo, Asahi Shimbun and many publications in Australia. He has also done tv news stories and documentaries that have been shown on ABC & SBS TV Australia, BBC, F24 (France), ARD (Germany) and NHK (Japan).

Public History: Photojournalism As Historical Evidence
In this video, award-winning photojournalists Ben Bohane, John Moore, Daniel Schwartz and Maggie Steber speak to the idea that journalists and photojournalists create “the first draft of history” and the essential role photographers play in persevering the past. Ben Bohane is an Australian photojournalist, author and TV producer who has covered Asia and the Pacific islands for the past 30 years. He is the founder and present Director of www.wakaphotos.com, the only photo agency based in the Pacific islands. He has the largest personal photo archive of the South Pacific in the world. His photographs are collected by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Australian War Memorial, as well as being held in private collections. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, National Geographic, The Wall St Journal, Stern (Germany), Monocle, The Guardian, French Geo, Asahi Shimbun and many publications in Australia. He has also done tv news stories and documentaries that have been shown on ABC & SBS TV Australia, BBC, F24 (France), ARD (Germany) and NHK (Japan). John Moore is a senior staff photographer and special correspondent for Getty Images. He has photographed in 65 countries on six continents and was posted internationally for 17 years, first to Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and Pakistan. Since returning to the U.S. in 2008 he has since focused on immigration and border issues. Moore has won top awards throughout his career, including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, World Press Photo honors, the John Faber Award and the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club, Photographer of the Year from Pictures of the Year International, the NPPA and Sony World Photography Organization. Daniel Schwartz graduated from Zurich School of Arts and Craft (now Zurich University of the Arts) in 1980. He concentrates on book projects, with exhibitions, based on extensive travels, photographic essays, and reportages covering the Eastern Hemisphere from Iran to East Timor, from Turkmenistan to Bangladesh. Schwartz's art is documentary; it is in the history of places. His journalism is not a reaction to events; it builds on memory. His method is best expressed in "Travelling through the Eye of History" (published, in 2009, like all his books by Thames & Hudson), a pre- and post-9/11 observation covering Central Asia including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kashmir. Photographer Maggie Steber has worked in 64 countries focusing on humanitarian, cultural, and social stories. Her honors include the Leica Medal of Excellence, World Press Photo Foundation, the Overseas Press Club, Pictures of the Year, the Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service to Journalism from the University of Missouri, the Alicia Patterson and Ernst Haas Grants, and a Knight Foundation grant for the New American Newspaper project.For over three decades, Steber has worked in Haiti. Aperture published her monograph, DANCING ON FIRE. In 2013 Steber was named as one of eleven Women of Vision by National Geographic Magazine, publishing a book and touring an exhibition in five American cities. Steber has served as a Newsweek Magazine contract photographer and as the Asst. Managing Editor of Photography and Features at The Miami Herald, overseeing staff projects that won the paper a Pulitzer and two finalist recognition. Her work is included in the Library of Congress, The Richter Library and in private collections. She has exhibited internationally. Clients include National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, AARP, The Guardian, and Geo Magazine among others. Steber teaches workshops internationally including at the World Press Joop Swart Master Classes, the International Center for Photography, Foundry Workshops and and the Obscura Photo Festival.

Ben Bohane Evening Presentation – Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2018
Ben Bohane is an Australian photojournalist, author and TV producer who has covered Asia and the Pacific islands for the past 30 years. He is the founder and present Director of www.wakaphotos.com, the only photo agency based in the Pacific islands. After several years in Sydney working on alternative lifestyle magazines, Bohane’s first foreign reportage assignment was covering the Vietnamese army withdrawal from Cambodia in 1989. He then spent the next four years based in South and South East Asia covering the wars of Cambodia, Burma and Afghanistan. He secured the first interview with Golden Triangle opium warlord General Khun Sa in 1991 after he was indicted by the US. In 1992 he was reportedly the first western traveler to go overland from Afghanistan to Moscow in decades, as the Soviet Union was collapsing. In 1992 he was based in London covering Northern Ireland and Europe. In 1994, Bohane returned to Australia and began covering the much under-reported Pacific region. Since then he has focused on “kastom and conflict” throughout Melanesia and indigenous Australia, documenting cults, cargo cults and new religious movements across the region. While covering every major conflict in the South Pacific – East Timor, West Papua, Maluku, PNG, Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia, he traveled and lived with a variety of tribal, cult and rebel groups and was thereby able to secure the first pictures of BRA leader Francis Ona in Bougainville in 1994 and the only interview and pictures of Guadalcanal warlord Harold Keke, before he surrendered to Australian and RAMSI troops in the Solomon Islands in 2003. His coverage of Indonesia included interviews with the commander of Laskar Jihad in Ambon, OPM Commanders in West Papua and Falantil Commanders in East Timor. He has the largest personal photo archive of the South Pacific in the world. His photographs are collected by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Australian War Memorial, as well as being held in private collections. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, National Geographic, The Wall St Journal, Stern (Germany), Monocle, The Guardian, French Geo, Asahi Shimbun and many publications in Australia. He has also done tv news stories and documentaries that have been shown on ABC & SBS TV Australia, BBC, F24 (France), ARD (Germany) and NHK (Japan). In 2003 he published 'Follow the Morning Star' documenting the forgotten struggle for independence in West Papua. HIs latest book 'The Black Islands—Spirit and War in Melanesia' has been published by Waka Press, with an exhibition touring widely. He is on the advisory council for the Pacific Institute of Public Policy:www.pacificpolicy.org, the main independent think tank for the Pacific and is one of the founders of the Australian photo collective www.degreesouth.com.au together with Tim Page. Bohane lives in Port Vila, Vanuatu where he continues to report/produce across the Pacific islands and Asia.

With a father who was an avid hobbyist photographer, James Whitlow Delano discusses how looking at his family's photo albums have given him food for thought when considering the value and function of photography. James Whitlow Delano has lived in Asia for 18 years. His work has been awarded internationally: the Alfred Eisenstadt Award (from Columbia University and Life Magazine), Leica’s Oskar Barnack, Picture of the Year International, PDN and others. Delano’s series on Kabul’s drug detox and psychiatric hospital was awarded 1st place in the 2008 NPPA Best of Photojournalism competition for Best Picture Story. His first monograph book, “Empire: Impressions from China” and work from “Japan Mangaland” have shown at several Leica Galleries in Europe. “Empire” was the first ever one-person show of photography at La Triennale di Milano Museum of Art. “The Mercy Project / Inochi” his charity photo book for hospice received the PX3 Gold Award and the Award of Excellence from Communication Arts. His work has appeared in magazines and photo festivals on five continents from Visa Pour L’Image, Rencontres D’Arles; to Noorderlicht. Paula Bronstein opens up about the traumatic experiences that many photographers encounter. Speaking only for herself, Paula discusses how she deals with those troubling moments. Paula Bronstein has been working as a photojournalist for close to 30 years and as a senior staff photographer with Getty Images for 10 years. In the Asian region and beyond, she has covered an enormous variety of natural disasters, war – conflict zones, news and features. After September 11, 2001 she was assigned to cover Pakistan and Afghanistan, focusing a lot of attention on Afghanistan over the past decade of war there. Among the many coveted awards, Pulitzer finalist in the “Breaking News” category in 2011 for her work covering the “Pakistan Floods”. Photographer of the year by the Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) of Thailand. 2010, runner-up “Photographer Of The Year” for her portfolio, in both Pictures of the Year-International ( POY ), and National Press Photographer’s Association (NPPA) . Other awards include Days Japan contest, finalist in the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. In 2008, the John Faber award from the Overseas Press Club of America.
