Their photographs reveal evolutions in our interactions and traditions, how we use (or have stopped using) public spaces, inequality and unrest, economic strain, and demands for justice. Photographers Sheila Pree Bright (Atlanta, U.S.A.), Yolanda Escobar Jiménez (Quito, Ecuador), Brian Otieno (Nairobi, Kenya), and Xiaojie Ouyang (Wuhan, China), discuss what it was like to return to places they had photographed before and make new photographs. In this class, she will touch on the basics of portraiture lighting, marketing your work, and tailoring your portfolio to fit the client. You can find the whole series here: everydayprojects.org/webinars The Everyday Projects 1:14:52 The Essentials Season 3: “Supporting your Long-term Vision” with James Rodríguez Accomplished photographer James Rodríguez will unpack the difficulties around sustaining long-term projects by illustrating how to create a unified vision, how to build and maintain relationships with communities, and how to seek various avenues of funding and support for the same project over time—whether through assignments, grants, or outside sources such as NGOs, commercial work, fixing, and video assignments. In this session, James will divulge his tips and tricks for achieving success with ongoing projects and how to create continuity and avoid burn-out. James Rodríguez is a Guatemala-based documentary photographer and filmmaker focusing on post-war processes, human rights abuses, migration, land tenure, and social conflicts in Mexico and Central America, but particularly in Guatemala, where his long-term project stems back to 2004. James, who holds a B.A. in Cultural Geography from UCLA, is represented by Panos Pictures and is a proud community member of The Everyday Projects, Diversify Photo, and Frontline Freelance Mexico. Currently working on a separate long-term project in the Yucatan peninsula funded by the Mexican National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA), James has worked for publications such as National Geographic, Le Monde, The LA Times, The New York Times, NPR, Vogue, and The Guardian, among others. James also collaborates regularly with NGOs, including Amnesty International, Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, UNDP, CARE, Justice in Motion, Rotary International. The Everyday Projects 1:19:26 The Essentials: The Anatomy of a Story by Andrea Wise In this session, Andrea Wise deconstructs two published stories she commissioned to demystify how stories come to be from the editor’s perspective. Wise talks about story origination, including assignment work and stories pitched by photographers, getting ideas and budgets approved, creative planning/art direction, working visually in harmony with text, selecting and sequencing images, and laying out stories for publication. You will learn more about what visual editors do, how to get on their radar, how best to work with them on assignment, and how to maximize the chances of getting your pitches picked up. 3:16 Laura Roumanos on Starting Photoville Since it began in 2012, Photoville has grown to become a fun, creative, and accessible annual space to showcase the power of photography. In this video, co-founder Laura Roumanos gives us a behind-the-scenes look into how Photoville started and discusses the diverse storytellers and audience they have been able to cultivate. Laura Roumanos is the executive producer and co-founder of United Photo Industries and Photoville where she has produced over 400 photo exhibitions and public projects worldwide. Originally from Sydney, Roumanos worked as a Producer and Arts Administrator before making the big move to NYC where she joined the Manhattan Theatre Club. She then headed to St. Ann’s Warehouse as the General Manager for several years where she worked to help present and produce large-scale international theatre, music, and art events.
