In this episode, we welcome members of the VII Community to discuss their recent Sony World Photography Award projects and achievements. Bangladesh-based photographer Jubair Ahmed Arnob, winner of the World Photography Award 2026 Student Category,presents his project The Place Where I Used to Play, which explores the transformation of Dhaka and the disappearing landscapes of his youth, reflecting how communities preserve memory even as urbanization erases the past. Peruvian photographer Sergio Meléndez presents his project Things Fall Back into Place at Night and Other Stories, which was shortlisted for both the Creative category and the Latin America Professional Award. His work considers the nature of fragmented memory and how home, body, and trauma intersect through traces, gaps, and enduring scars. Julián Cabral from Argentina will share his work Triplets, which was shortlisted in this year’s Student Category. Triplets narrates the lives of Julián and his two brothers, documenting the passage of time and showing what life is like for three middle-class young people in Argentina today. We are delighted to be joined by Peruvian photographer Francisco Vigo, who will present his project “Soon the Rain Will Come”, capturing the Porcón community located next to the Yanacocha mine, one of the most important mines in Peru. Ksenia Ivanova, a Russian photographer currently based in Georgia, will discuss her series “Between the Trees”, offering insight into the Russian-occupied breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Bulgarian photographer Mihaela Aroyo will showcase “Dreaming in Bulgarian”, giving voice to the Bulgarian diaspora living in the historical region of Bessarabia within Moldova and Ukraine. Italian photographer Viviana Peretti, currently based in Colombia, discusses her series “Searching for Lost Lives” sharing a light on the people who forcibly disappeared in Colombia. Iranian photographer Shirin Abedi, who grew up and lives in Hanover, shows “Invisible Students” which investigates the long-term effects of school bullying in Germany. PhotoWings 49:22 Photo Stories from the Square Mile Initiative This series showcases recent work from members of VII Community. Every few months, we invite photographers from VII Community to present their stories. In this episode, we look at three photographers whose work is featured in “Square Mile” at the PhotoVogue Festival. VII Community provides ongoing education and support to a network of The VII Foundation’s alumni and Foundry Photojournalism Workshop participants, numbering more than 1200 professionals. Square Mile is an initiative that presents diverse photographic explorations by members of VII Community. It is a geographic framework, signifying a local focus on spaces where personal, local, and global influences intersect. The projects explore how themes such as climate change, identity, history, legacy, migration, gender, and environment appear within a local perspective. The upcoming edition of Square Mile, curated especially for the PhotoVogue festival, offers an insight into the work of twelve photographers. They show humanity’s multifaceted connection to the natural world, explore the resilience of communities deeply rooted in their land, and pay respect to ancestral traditions. They tell a story about nature’s guardians, who are protecting the environment and creatures that populate it, and examine the intricate relations between humans and all living. We are delighted to be joined by American photographer Jordan Gale, who presents “You Will Never Want for Anything.” His project explores the Klamath River, the site of the world’s largest dam removal project, and in doing so, examines the history of exploitation and resource extraction. Chinky Shukla is an Indian photographer who will discuss “When Buddha Stopped Smiling.”. Her project tells the stories of the desert communities of Pokhran. When India announced its nuclear capability in 1974, the explosions echoed across the world — but in that thunderous moment, local voices were silenced. Mexican photographer Sara Escobar showcases “Burrolandia: The Donkey Obsession,” a story about a donkey sanctuary led by German Flores. As mechanization has replaced working animals, Mexico’s donkey population has plummeted. At this shelter in Otumba, caregivers work to provide dignified lives for Mexican donkeys while preserving their legacy. VII Community provides ongoing education and support to a network of The VII Foundation’s alums. VII Community is a program of The VII Foundation in partnership with PhotoWings. In this episode, we are delighted to welcome two members of the VII Community to discuss their recent World Press Photo award-winning projects. Iranian photographer Ebrahim Alipoor, former Mentee in the VII Mentor Program, will present his project ‘Bullets Have No Borders,’ which explores the dangerous work of kolbars (border couriers) who transport goods on perilous journeys from Iraq and Turkey into Iranian Kurdistan. New Zealand-based photographer Tatsiana Chypsanava will discuss her series ‘Te Urewera—The Living Ancestor of Tūhoe People’. The project documents Indigenous communities defending their sovereignty and the stewardship of their homeland in the face of right-wing government reform. Brazilian artist and visual storyteller, Carolina Arantes, discusses her book First Génération, a documentary about the first generation of French women of African descent born in France, their daily quest for identity, and their fight for a socio-cultural place that legitimizes their dual origin. Canadian photographer Renaud Philippe presents his book RETOMADA, a long-term project that documents the Guarani people’s movement to reclaim their ancestral lands in Brazil. Their struggle is marked by violence, with dozens of Indigenous lives lost each year. This discussion is hosted by contributing photographer to the VII Foundation, Anush Babajanyan.
