David Guttenfelder

In this talk, presented at the virtual 2020 Eddie Adams Workshop, award-winning photographer David Guttenfelder discusses his career as a photojournalist, beginning as a community journalist in Iowa, traveling the world to document stories for organizations like National Geographic, and establishing an Associated Press bureau in North Korea.

David Guttenfelder is a documentary photographer and National Geographic Explorer focusing on geopolitical conflict, conservation, and culture. David has spent more than 25 years as a photojournalist based in Japan, India, Israel, Ivory Coast and Kenya covering world events in nearly 100 countries. In 2011, he helped to open a bureau in Pyongyang for the AP, the first western news agency to have an office in North Korea. David is an eight-time World Press Photo Award winner and a seven-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is the 2013 ICP Infinity Prize winner for photojournalism and a winner of the Overseas Press Club of America John Faber, Olivier Rebbot, & Feature Photography awards. POYi and NPPA have named him Photojournalist of the Year. He is based in Minneapolis, MN.

The Eddie Adams Workshop is the only tuition-free photojournalism seminar of its kind. Applicants at the start of their career submit portfolios for consideration. One hundred participants selected solely on the merit of their pictures team up with top professional photographers and editors for a four-day gathering that includes assignments, portfolio reviews, panel discussions and presentations. The Workshop began in 1988 with the goal to redress the exclusivity of professional opportunities by accepting students based on their demonstrated skills, and not on their ability to pay tuition. The all-volunteer faculty and staff, many of whom are alumni, are passionate about the mission and donate their time and expertise. The Workshop has an unparalleled history of nurturing talent, exchanging ideas and building relationships. The workshop takes place annually over Columbus Day Weekend, normally in Jeffersonville, New York. During the pandemic, the workshop has been conducted virtually.
