Photographers chosen for the 2017 PDN’s 30: New and Emerging Photographers shared useful lessons they learned as they launched their careers, explain how they got their work seen and noticed, and offer advice on finding your style and building support for personal projects with PDN’s Editorial Director, Holly Hughes.

Holly Stuart Hughes Holly Stuart Hughes is the editor of Photo District News and PDNOnline.com, the monthly magazine and website for professional photographers. PDN provides photographers with the news, inspiration and insights they need to succeed. Each year, the editors of PDN publish PDN’s 30, an annual issue showcasing 30 new and emerging photographers to watch, and providing information for student and emerging photographers on launching and sustaining a career in today’s market. An experienced portfolio reviewer, Hughes has spoken on book publishing, intellectual property and artists’ rights. She lead a walking tour of Photoville in 2016 and and is delighted to return this year.
Sasha Arutyonova has shot for The New York Times, AFAR and Norwegian Air. A graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts, she was chosen for PDN’s 30 2017, the magazine’s issue on new and emerging photographers to watch. She is the cofounder of the collective Nomadique. Her work was chosen this year for The Fence.
Benedict Evans’s photography has been published in New York, The Guardian Weekend, WIRED and Esquire, and he has shot assignments for Budweiser and Cadillac. He assisted photographer Platon for five years before striking out on his own. Selected for PDN’s 30 2017: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch, he has also been honored in American Photography 31 and 32, the PDN Photo Annual and other awards.
Frances F. Denny is a photographer whose work has been shown at ClampArt Gallery in New York City and in numerous group exhibitions. She is also one half of Dafne, a creative partnership with art director Catherine Duffy that produces campaigns. Denny’s first book, “Let Virtue Be Your Guide,” was published by Radius Books in 2016. She was named one of PDN’s 30 in 2016.

Jake Naughton is a photographer working on projects about the construction and presentation of identity, ranging from the LGBT communities in Kenya, Uganda and India, to the geopolitical crucible that is Iraqi Kurdistan. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times. Additional clients include The Atavist, GlobalPost, Highline, NPR, and VICE Magazine.
In March of 2017, Jake was selected as one of PDN’s “30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch”. His work has been recognized and supported by the Magenta Foundation, American Photography, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and others. He is a founding member of the creative cooperative Black Box and an alumni of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
