From the beginning, Paola Gianturco wanted to create a difference for the women artisans she profiles within In Her Hands. This led Paola and her collaborator Toby Tuttle to donate all author royalties from the book to organizations that benefit her subjects.
Paola’s message traveled far and wide. While Paola’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show and exhibition at Chicago’s Field Museum helped bring her advocacy to a mass audience, photos from the book also reached the upper echelons of US policymaking and international diplomacy. The United Nations General Assembly exhibited photos from In Her Hands at the 2000 Beijing +5 Conference in their public lobby. Two years later, another In Her Handsexhibition opened in the Rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.
Beyond the direct contributions from her author royalties, the success of the book comes just as much from inspired readers. One reader felt moved to donate $10,000 directly to the Gujarat, India embroiderers featured in the book. “It really moved me to see what happened when the readers of the book collaborated, unbeknownst to me — I didn’t know this would happen,“ Paola says.
