Sara Terry – PhotoWings Interview
Remembering Sara Terry
We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sara Terry (1955–2025) — an extraordinary documentary photographer and filmmaker whose life’s work illuminated stories of healing, resilience, and community. It was our great honor to know her, to work alongside her, and to share in her light.
Sara devoted her life to helping others see beyond conflict, to find the humanity that endures after war. Her landmark project Aftermath: Bosnia’s Long Road to Peace led her to found The Aftermath Project in 2003, guided by her belief that “War is Only Half the Story.”
A Guggenheim Fellow (2012), Sara continued to explore forgiveness and reconciliation through Forgiveness and Conflict: Lessons from Africa and her documentary Fambul Tok. She also co-led 1 in 6 by 2030, a global project exploring the human side of aging and connection.
Most recently, she produced I Feel Myself to Be Part of Something and directed its first film, The Feeling of Home, a heartfelt celebration of how the arts can bring communities together.
We will miss you deeply, Sara. Thank you for the stories, the wisdom, and the grace you shared with the world. We’ll do our best to carry your spirit forward.
